Most European countries experience a continuous decline in manufacturing employment. In a recently published article in the DIW Quarterly Journal of Economic Research (DIW Vierteljahresheft) 1/2015, Alexander Cordes and Birgit Gehrke investigate the question whether a relationship exists between the quantitative development of manufacturing employment and its structural composition (functions and tasks). The results show that the decline in manufacturing employment in the EU since 2008 is mainly driven by the decreased demand for production tasks. This effect was not that large in the knowledge intensive industry (compared to other industries) due to the higher relevance of strategically important functions (STEM professions, high-skilled management functions). Employment in German manufacturing was generally favored by national employment trends and a comparably low share of production tasks.
